Behind Oilfield Measurements: Basic Petrophysics

Learn to read well logs the way petrophysicists do — and to question them. This practical course takes you behind the numbers in formation evaluation: what each log really measures, how to check data quality, and how to turn gamma ray, density, neutron and resistivity readings into shale volume, porosity and water saturation. Eight illustrated lessons with worked examples, four built-in calculators, and a hands-on project where you interpret a synthetic well cell by cell, including washouts, shaly beds and a water-resistivity sensitivity case. Pass the project and the final assessment to earn a GELife certificate of completion signed by the Training Director. Ideal for geoscience and engineering students, early-career professionals, mud loggers and MWD/LWD staff moving into formation evaluation. Basic geology and algebra recommended.

What you will be able to do

  • Calculate shale volume, porosity and water saturation from well logs
  • Check log data for depth, units, missing values and borehole effects
  • Interpret a well cell by cell and report net reservoir and pay candidates
  • Explain what gamma ray, resistivity, density, neutron and sonic logs measure
  • Report results with assumptions, sensitivities and missing evidence
  • Distinguish measurements from interpretations, and screened pay from reserves
